Every week I meet travelers who over-packed for their surf trip, and a few who forgot the basics. After years of teaching surf lessons in Taghazout, here is my honest, no-nonsense packing list.
What We Already Provide (Don’t Pack These)
This is the part most people don’t know: you do not need to bring or rent a surfboard or wetsuit. Every lesson includes:
- Surfboard, sized to your level
- Full wetsuit, all sizes available
- Bottle of water
That already removes the two heaviest, most expensive items from your suitcase.
The Actual Packing List
For the water
- Swimwear (worn under the wetsuit we provide)
- A towel, a big beach towel works fine
- Reef-safe sunscreen, waterproof, you’re in the sun and water for hours
- An old t-shirt to wear under the wetsuit if you tend to get rashes
For the village
- Comfortable sandals, Taghazout’s streets are relaxed and sandy
- A light jacket or hoodie, evenings by the ocean get cooler than you’d expect, even in summer
- A reusable water bottle
- Cash (dirhams), small cafes and shops are often cash-only
Nice to have
- A waterproof phone case or GoPro if you want your own footage (we also offer free photos on sandboarding trips)
- Ear plugs designed for surfing, useful if you’re prone to surfer’s ear on longer trips
- A dry bag, handy for the walk between the beach and your accommodation
What You Genuinely Don’t Need
A surfboard bag, a wetsuit, surf wax, or a leash, all of this is provided with your lesson. Save the suitcase space and the airline oversize baggage fee.
A Note on Weather & Water Temperature
Taghazout’s water sits between 16°C and 22°C depending on the season, so you’ll be in a wetsuit most of the year. On land, expect warm sunny days and cooler evenings, classic Atlantic coast weather. Bring layers rather than one heavy jacket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I bring my own surfboard?
Not necessary for lessons, we provide beginner-friendly soft-top boards matched to your level. If you’re an experienced surfer with your own board preference, you’re welcome to bring it.
Do I need travel insurance for surfing?
It’s always a good idea for any active trip abroad. Lessons are taught with safety as the priority in beginner-friendly conditions, but travel insurance covering water sports is a smart precaution.
What about visas for Morocco?
Requirements depend on your nationality, check your country’s current Morocco visa policy before booking flights.
