For surfers who already stand up
Surf Coaching & Guiding in Taghazout
Past the beginner stage and stuck? Coaching is not another lesson in the whitewater. It is someone who surfs this coast every day telling you exactly why you are missing the wave.
The plateau
Why most surfers get stuck at the same place
You can stand up. You can catch whitewater. Then green waves start closing out on you and the progress stops for a year.
In almost every case it is one of three things, and none of them is fitness or talent.
You are sitting in the wrong place. A metre either side of the peak is the difference between the wave lifting you and the wave passing under you.
You are paddling too late. By the time it feels steep enough, it already is.
You are looking down. The board goes where your eyes go, and most improvers stare at their own feet at the exact moment they need to look down the line.
Which one you need
Lesson, coaching or guiding?
| Beginner lesson | Coaching | Guiding | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You can | Nothing yet | Stand up, catch whitewater | Ride green waves |
| Where | Sandy beach break | Beach break or mellow point | Whichever break is working |
| Focus | Safety and the pop-up | Positioning, timing, turning | Wave selection, tides, local knowledge |
| I am | Teaching you | Watching and correcting you | Surfing with you |
Not sure which you are? Message me your honest level and I will tell you. Nobody benefits from being put in the wrong group — least of all me.
What a session looks like
Corrected in the water, not lectured on the sand
We start with a short conversation about what you think is going wrong. Usually it is not what is actually going wrong.
Then we surf. I stay within a few metres of you, calling you into waves and telling you what to change while it is still fresh — not in a debrief forty minutes later when you have forgotten the feeling.
Video is available if you want it. Most people find one clear instruction they can feel in the water beats an hour of footage afterwards.
The breaks
Where we surf once you are past the beach
Taghazout has right-hand point breaks that are genuinely world class, and the skill is knowing which one suits the swell, the tide and you — on that morning.
Devil’s Rock in Tamraght is the usual first step off the beach breaks. Hash Point is a mellow point that works on smaller swells. La Source and Killer Point come in as you get stronger.
Anchor Point is the famous one, and it is a genuinely serious wave when it is big. Plenty of visiting surfers paddle out there on the wrong day. The full map is in the Morocco surf spots guide.

Common questions
What is surf coaching in Taghazout?
Surf coaching is for people who can already stand up and catch waves but want to improve technique. Unlike a beginner lesson it focuses on positioning, wave selection, turning and reading the ocean, usually at a point or reef break rather than in whitewater.
What is the difference between surf guiding and a surf lesson?
A lesson teaches you to surf. Guiding assumes you already can, and takes you to whichever break is working that day, with advice on where to sit, which waves to take and how the tide will change the spot through the session.
Do you offer private surf lessons in Taghazout?
Yes. Private one-to-one sessions are available on request and are the fastest way to fix a specific problem, whether that is a slow pop-up, poor positioning or trouble committing to steeper waves.
I can stand up but I am stuck. Can coaching help?
That plateau is the most common reason people book coaching. It is usually one of three things: sitting in the wrong spot, paddling too late, or looking down instead of where you are going. All three are quick to fix once someone is watching you from the water.
Which surf spots do you use for intermediate and advanced surfers?
It depends entirely on the swell and tide that morning. Anchor Point, Killer Point, Hash Point and La Source all work at different sizes, and Devil’s Rock in Tamraght is a good step up from the beach breaks.
Do I need my own board for a coaching session?
No. Boards suited to your level are available, from funboards to shortboards. If you have brought your own, bring it, and I will tell you honestly whether it suits the conditions that day.
How much does surf coaching cost in Taghazout?
Group sessions start at 25 EUR per person. Private coaching and multi-day guiding packages are priced on request, since they depend on how many days you want and how far we travel for waves.
Tell me what is going wrong
Describe your level honestly — how long you have surfed, what you can and cannot do — and I will tell you whether coaching or guiding is the right call, and which break we would use.
