The honest answer first

You probably should not fly your board here

Airlines charge an oversize fee for a board bag each way. Over a return trip that regularly costs more than renting a board for the whole week.

You also spend the trip worrying about dings, hauling a bag through two airports, and hoping it appears on the belt.

The only good reason to bring your own is if you are an advanced surfer riding a shape you genuinely cannot replace here. If that is you, bring it — and I will still tell you honestly when it is the wrong board for the day.

What to take out

Which board suits you

BoardBest forWhy
Soft-topBeginners, first weekFloats well, catches waves easily, safe to fall on
Funboard / mini-malImproversStill forgiving, but turns properly once you are up
ShortboardConfident surfersOnly worth it once you are consistently riding green waves
3/2 wetsuitAutumn to springWater sits around 16–18°C in winter
ShortyPeak summerWater reaches about 22°C in late summer

The most common mistake visitors make is renting too short a board too early. Volume is what catches waves. Nobody has ever improved faster by making it harder to stand up.

If you are taking lessons

You do not need to rent anything

Every surf lesson already includes a board suited to your level, a wetsuit in your size and water. There is no equipment surcharge.

People often book rental alongside a lesson and then realise they have paid twice for the same board. Ask first.

Before you paddle out

A rented board will not tell you where to surf

This is the part visitors underestimate. Conditions here change beach to beach and hour to hour.

Beginners belong on the sandy beach breaks — Panoramas, Banana Beach in Aourir, Devil’s Rock in Tamraght. The famous point breaks are reef waves and they punish people who paddle out on the wrong day.

Ask someone before you go. The Morocco surf spots guide covers every break, and the season guide covers which months suit which level.

Rental questions

Can I rent a surfboard in Taghazout?

Yes. Surfboards and wetsuits are available to rent by the day or by the week in Taghazout and Tamraght, in sizes from beginner soft-tops through funboards to shortboards.

How much does surfboard rental cost in Taghazout?

Rental is priced on request and depends on the board and how long you need it. If you are taking a lesson you do not need to rent anything, because the board and wetsuit are already included in the lesson price.

Should I bring my own surfboard to Morocco or rent one?

For most people renting is cheaper. Airline oversize fees for a board bag both ways frequently cost more than a week of rental, and you carry nothing through the airport. Bring your own only if you are advanced and attached to a specific board.

Do I need a wetsuit in Taghazout?

Yes, for most of the year. Water temperatures range from about 16 degrees Celsius in winter to 22 in late summer. A 3/2 suit covers most of the year and a shorty is enough at the height of summer.

What board should a beginner rent?

A soft-top, and a big one. Volume makes waves easier to catch and a soft deck makes falling on it far less painful. Almost everyone tries to go too short too early.

Can I rent a board without taking a lesson?

Yes. Rental is available on its own. That said, if you have never surfed before, one lesson first will save you a frustrating week of paddling in the wrong place.
