Plan a Taghazout Surf Trip Without Wasting Money
Most people overspend on a Morocco surf trip in the same four places. None of them is the surfing. Here is where the money actually goes, from someone who has watched it happen for ten years.

Four places people waste money
Timing
Come in the shoulder season
The single biggest saving on a Taghazout surf trip is choosing the right month, and the cheapest months are also the best ones for learning.
May to September is quieter, cheaper, and the waves are smaller and far more forgiving. If you have never surfed, this is when you want to be here.
December to February brings the big Atlantic swells. Accommodation is at its most expensive, the line-ups are busiest, and the conditions suit experienced surfers rather than first-timers.
April, May, September and October sit in between and are, for my money, the best weeks of the year to be here.
Season by season
When to book, and what you get
| Window | Waves | Crowds | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May – Sep | Small, gentle | Quiet | Lowest | Beginners, families |
| Apr / Oct | Balanced | Moderate | Mid | Most people |
| Nov – Mar | Big, consistent | Busiest | Highest | Intermediate and up |
There is a full month-by-month breakdown in the best time to surf in Taghazout guide.
Gear
Leave your board at home
This is the easiest money you will save, and the one people get wrong most often.
Airlines charge oversize fees each way for a board bag. Over a return trip that frequently costs more than renting a board for the entire week — and you carry nothing through the airport.
Surfboard rental in Taghazout covers soft-tops, funboards and shortboards, plus wetsuits in every size, by the day or the week. And if you are taking lessons, the board and wetsuit are already in the price, so you rent nothing at all.
The only good reason to fly your own board is if you are advanced and genuinely attached to a specific shape.
What to actually pack
The short list
- Swimwear, a towel and reef-safe sunscreen
- A light jacket — evenings by the ocean cool down fast
- Cash in dirhams; many small cafés do not take cards
- Flip flops and one pair of shoes you can walk in
What you do not need: a board, a wetsuit, a board bag, or surf-specific clothing. All of it is either provided or available locally for less than the airline will charge you to carry it.
The full list is in the packing guide.
Lessons
Why local instruction pays for itself
Taghazout fills with seasonal instructors who arrive in autumn and leave in spring. They are often good surfers. They do not know which beach works on a Tuesday morning in February.
Conditions here change from one beach to the next and from one hour to the next. Being taken to the right beach for your level, that morning, is the difference between a lesson where you stand up and a lesson where you get worked in whitewater that is too big for you.
That is not a small thing when you are paying per session. Beginner surf lessons in Morocco start at €25 with me, in groups of four or five, board and wetsuit included — and I decide the beach after I have read the swell.
The spots
Where to surf, and where not to
Taghazout is famous for waves that most visitors should not paddle out on. Knowing the difference saves you a wasted session, or worse.
| Spot | Wave | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Anchor Point | Right-hand point over reef | Intermediate to advanced |
| Killer Point | Right-hand point over reef | Intermediate to advanced |
| Panoramas Beach | Sandy beach break | Beginners |
| Banana Beach (Aourir) | Sandy beach break | Beginners |
| Devil’s Rock (Tamraght) | Beach and reef | Beginner to intermediate |

Before you book
Common questions
How much does a surf trip to Taghazout cost?
A realistic all-in week is roughly 675 to 975 EUR including flights, accommodation, food, three surf lessons and transport. Surf lessons themselves start at 25 EUR per person including board and wetsuit.
Should I bring my own surfboard to Morocco?
Usually not. Airline oversize fees for a board bag often cost more than renting for the whole week, and rental boards in Taghazout cover everything from soft-tops to shortboards. Bring your own only if you are an advanced surfer attached to a specific board.
Is surfboard rental available in Taghazout?
Yes. Boards and wetsuits are available to rent by the day or the week in Taghazout and Tamraght, in every size. If you are taking lessons, the board and wetsuit are already included in the lesson price.
When is the cheapest time to visit Taghazout?
May to September is the quieter, cheaper window, and it also happens to be the gentler surf season, which suits beginners. December to February is peak season for experienced surfers, when accommodation is most expensive and the line-ups are busiest.
Can beginners surf at Anchor Point?
No. Anchor Point is a right-hand point break over reef and it suits intermediate to advanced surfers only. Beginners learn on sandy beach breaks such as Panoramas Beach and Banana Beach, where the wave breaks gently and you can stand up.
Do I need a car in Taghazout?
No. Taghazout and Tamraght are walkable, taxis are cheap, and any surf school handles transport to whichever beach is working that day. A car is only worth it if you plan to explore as far as Imsouane or the spots south of Agadir.
How many surf lessons should I book for a week?
Three is the number that works for most people. Most beginners stand up in their first session and ride an unbroken green wave by around the third. Spreading three lessons across the week beats stacking five on consecutive days.
