Surf Lessons for Kids and Families in Taghazout

Reda with a smiling young girl and her mother next to a blue soft-top surfboard on the beach after a family surf lesson

The quick answer

Kids can take surf lessons in Taghazout from 7 years old, in group or private lessons. They learn on sandy beaches in shallow water, with the instructors in the water beside them the whole time, while parents can relax and watch from the beach. Lessons start at €25 per person with the board, wetsuit and water included.

Families are some of my favourite people to teach. There is nothing like a seven-year-old standing up on their first wave and turning round to check that mum or dad saw it. Here is everything parents ask me before they book.

Which lesson suits your family

LessonPriceGood for
Open group€25 per personKids and teens who are happy in a small group with other beginners
Private group€35 per personThe whole family together, only your family in the group
One-to-one€45A nervous child, or a parent who wants full attention for one kid

For most families I recommend the private group. The lesson goes at your family’s pace, siblings can learn together, and if a parent wants to try too, they join the same session. Groups never go above 4 to 5 people per instructor.

The open group lessons at 11am and 1pm come with free photos, which parents love: you get pictures of your kid surfing without having to stand in the water with your phone.

What a kids’ lesson looks like

  1. Wetsuit and board. We fit a wetsuit in their size and give them a soft foam board, which is light, stable and safe to fall on.
  2. Briefing on the sand. Before anyone gets wet, we practise lying on the board, paddling and standing up on the beach, and explain the few simple safety rules.
  3. Into the whitewater. We go into shallow water where they can stand. At first I push them into the small broken waves and tell them when to stand up, so they get the feeling straight away.
  4. Standing up. Most kids stand up in their first lesson, often faster than the adults. They are light, they are not afraid to fall, and they find it hilarious.

A lesson lasts about two hours to two and a half hours.

How we keep kids safe

  • Instructors in the water, right next to the children, not watching from the sand. That is why parents can stay on the beach.
  • Sandy beaches only. Kids learn at beaches like Panoramas and Banana Beach, where the waves break over sand. They never surf the rocky point breaks. See my guide to Taghazout surf spots for beginners.
  • Shallow water. Kids stay where they can put their feet down.
  • Small groups. 4 to 5 people per instructor at most, so every child is always in reach.
  • The right day. I check the waves every morning. If it is not suitable for children that day, I tell you honestly and we move the lesson.

Children do not need to be strong swimmers, but they should be comfortable in water and happy to get their face wet. If you are not sure, message me and tell me a bit about your child; I will tell you honestly whether it is a good idea. More in is surfing in Morocco safe?

Best time of year for kids

You can bring kids any month of the year, because there are protected sandy beaches even in winter. June to September is the easiest: the waves are small and soft and the water is at its warmest, around 20 to 22°C. In winter the water is cooler, around 17°C, and the waves are bigger, so I choose the most sheltered beach for children. Full details are in my month-by-month guide.

What to bring

  • Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit
  • A towel and a warm top for after the lesson
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water for the parents on the beach
  • A snack: kids are always hungry after surfing

The board, wetsuit and water are included. Flying in? Here is how to get from Agadir airport to Taghazout.

Frequently asked questions

What age can kids start surf lessons in Taghazout?

From 7 years old, for both group and private lessons. Tell me your child’s age when you book so I can choose the right beach and group.

Do parents have to go in the water?

No. The instructors are in the water with the kids the whole time, so parents can wait and watch from the beach. If you want to surf too, you are welcome to join the lesson.

How much do kids’ surf lessons cost?

The same as adults: €25 per person for an open group lesson, €35 per person for a private group and €45 for one-to-one. The board, wetsuit and water are included.

Does my child need to be able to swim?

They do not need to be a strong swimmer, but they should be comfortable in water. Kids learn in shallow water where they can stand, with a floating board and an instructor beside them.

Can the whole family take a lesson together?

Yes. A private group lesson is just your family with the instructor, so parents and children can learn together at the same pace.
